What is Walk To Bethlehem?

Walk To Bethlehem is a theatrical excursion back to the time just before Christ’s birth, two-thousand years ago. You will be escorted through Bethlehem by one of our friendly guides, who will protect you from Roman soldiers, beggars and thieves. You will meet Shepherds, Wiseman, and even Angels before finding the Baby Jesus in the Manger.

After what we hope will be a pleasurable visit to Bethlehem, you will return to the twenty first century where you will enjoy homemade Christmas goodies, chat with some of the cast, and listen to Christmas Carols. Last years “walk” was presented to an audience of over one thousand.

We hope you will be able to join us again this year and anticipate Walk To Bethlehem will become part of your family’s Christmas tradition, each and every year.

This is an outdoor event so dress warmly; it is frequently quite cold in Bethlehem at this time of year. Also wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain is uneven.

6. What type of a reception will I get when I arrive in Bethlehem?

You will be warmly received by the residents of Bethlehem, but some of the Roman Soldiers can be outright hostile, so stick closely to your guide. Once you return to the 21st century you will enjoy refreshments, listen to Christmas music, and chat with some of our cast.

7. What is the history of “Walk To Bethlehem?”

Walk To Bethlehem is a concept brought to our church by a congregation member, Gillian Hanson. Gillian, her husband Steve and four children moved to Quebec from Ontario, bringing this Christmas tradition with them. Under the direction of Jane Pateridis a production team was assembled and a “St-Lazare - Hudson Walk” was born.

The Walk is presented as a Christmas gift to our community and has been well received from the beginning. We expected the first “Walk” to draw 1,000 visitors, this number was surpassed in 2005 and 2006. We are anticipating more than 2,000 guests to visit Bethlehem this year!.

We certainly hope you will join us and make Walk To Bethlehem a traditional part of your family’s Christmas celebrations.

8. Who plans, sets up, and runs Bethlehem Walk?

There is a production team that works from June onwards, planning and preparing. By opening night over one hundred church members, cast, crew and support will participate in this year’s event.

Bethlehem is constructed over a seven day period starting in November. Over two dozen persons contribute all or part of those days to complete construction of the set. Without all the volunteer help it would not be possible. The cast has been rehearsing since September, and are thrilled and excited to “get the show on the road”.
